For whatever reason, all my friends are musical wizards and in great bands, but yeah, it really skipped over me. I’ve got “Golden Girls” and “Cheers.” I’m not the best singer. You check it out, I think it’s pretty bad. Matthew: On my website I have a series of 1980s TV theme songs that I’ve resung and arguably, I’ve probably got the worst voice on the planet. All this ethereal French music, I think that would be unique to listen to. Matthew: It’d be cool to chipmunk-ize “The Virgin Suicides” soundtrack. PW: If you could tackle one song as Simon, what would it be? Matthew: Oh, I would love that! The movie has definitely proven that they’re timeless, so that would be great. PW: Maybe you, Justin Long and Jesse McCartney should revive that trend and make a punk CD? But if you really want to get on the fringe, there was a record called “Chipmunk Punk” in the early ’80s and that’s kind of what took the show into the more modern version that we know – they sing Blondie and the old punk songs. PW: My favorite song of theirs is “Christmas Don’t Be Late.” What’s yours? It’s the biggest deal to me – even the older records from the ’50s, they have my heart and to be a part of that legend is mind blowing. Matthew: The minute I got the phone call, it was like “holy heck yes!” Actors talk about dreaming of playing Othello, but for me, it’s Simon. ![]() PW: So what was your response when asked to play Simon? Matthew: I’ve got a very holy space for the franchise in my heart, so in my head I may have made a bigger deal out of my involvement than it is. Oddly, I feel more a part of this than anything else I’ve been lucky enough to be in. But because you do so many takes and see so many pieces of the movie while recording, you walk away with the feeling that you were there for filming. Matthew Gray Gubler: It’s funny, when the first one came out, I hadn’t met anybody until the premiere actually. PopWrap: With an animated film, I’m always curious how much a part of the finished product the voice actors feel. But unlike me, Matthew relishes his warble. ![]() Neither he or I can carry a tune to save our lives. A role that Matthew says is more important in his mind than playing Othello on London’s West End.Īs it turns out, I might not have only been drawn to Matthew because of his model good looks, jealousy inducing hair or quirky style - we are also kindred karaoke spirits. But one place he didn’t catch my eye is in “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel.”īut before you start to think I’m a fair-weather fan, know that Matthew didn’t garner much attention in the kiddie flick because he voices Simon. ![]() Matty Gray (cuz we’re close like that) continued to get my attention in “(500) Days of Summer,” when he played Tom’s best friend Paul. Although I’m admittedly not the world’s biggest “Criminal Minds” watcher, I’ve been drawn to one thing in every episode I’ve seen: Matthew Gray Gubler. ![]()
